New experiment with reduction

You can’t make an omlet without breaking a few eggs

These pots over grew crystals like crazy.  I either need to reduce the amount of zinc or up the firing temp.

First Firing of The Summer

June 28th, 2010 by admin

Just finished a firing with some new techniques and glazes.  Mixed some  sculpture and under glaze painting with the crystalline glazed porcelain.  The nesting gourd shapes turned out awesome.

Underglaze anyone?

May 6th, 2010 by admin

I have had a few friends ask me how I get the images on my pottery.  They are painted on with underglaze.   Underglaze is a slip-like glaze that fires onto the clay a lot like paint.  It looks great and is stable under glazes like celadon and most cone 10 transparents.  My favorite is a clear glaze developed by Pete Pinnell called Pete’s Clear.   It has been frustrating trying to find a crystalline clear that is compatible with the underglaze.   I have killed several test pots in the search.  Drawing and painting have always been a passion of mine.  Combining drawing and clay is a logical step -and a fun one.

First successful copper red firing in my new kiln

May 4th, 2010 by admin

This is the first time I was able to judge the atmosphere of  my kiln accuratly enough to achieve copper reds.

A friend on the Crystalline glaze made me a Oxygen probe that made it easy to start an early reduction at 1500,  and carry a med reduction all the way to cone 10

These pots will be for sale at summer fest August 7, at Bountiful park.

December Firings

December 22nd, 2009 by admin

I just received an early Christmas present from Terry Fallon.  He built me an O2 probe that will help me fine tune the atmosphere of my kiln,  It works like a dream.  I was able to trim 6 hours off my first firing.  I put a few pots back in the kiln for a post fire reduction and got some nice purples.  No red yet sigh…..

valentines-day-pots1

These are some pots made on Valentines day. I was shooting for new shapes for Jars and bottles. Keeping the walls thin and the shapes elegant and sleek were my goals for throwing today. I hope to have some finished pots to post by next week
